Part of a series, but a stand-alone novel with its own conclusion. No cliff-hangers.

Danger, secrets and lies…

Maverick DARK officer Simon Byrne, undercover on a Caribbean island, must stop an international arms dealer’s sale of uranium that could trigger world conflict. Simon’s mission goes sideways when the woman he once failed to protect is assigned as his tech officer. Vowing to keep her safe, he fights the smoldering heat between them because distraction could cost their lives. But despite his personal rule of no entanglements, she’s in his head…and in his heart.

By-the-book Janna Harris is determined to prove herself in the field and uncover whether her late husband, who sold to the arms dealer, also betrayed his government. A treason investigation could expose Janna’s own secrets. Her attraction to Simon wars with her pledge never to allow another man into her life. But can she walk away from the only man who could heal her battered soul?

Emotions and danger collide as the powder-keg deadline ticks down on their mission—and their survival.

Dark Rules The DARK Files Book 4 edition by Susan Vaughan Literature Fiction eBooks

I love this intensely riveting contemporary romance that had my heart pumping as I hung on to the edge of my seat from beginning to end. I loved the sizzling chemistry, interactions and repartee between maverick DARK officer, Simon Byrne and by-the-book technical geek, Janna Harris. Ms. Vaughan is the queen of romantic suspense and I look forward to reading more from this talented author. I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book and enjoyed it so much, I purchased a copy for my keeper library.

Dark Rules The DARK Files Book 4 edition by Susan Vaughan Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I've read the other two books in the Dark series and this is my favorite. I think because I fell in love with both the hero and heroine. Janna is a sweet computer geek who is learning how to regroup after a hellish marriage to man everyone thought was American's hero. Simon is a fun loving guy op's agent who in the past lost everyone he's ever loved. He chooses to keep relationships light and just for fun. He's always had a crush on Janna but knew she deserved more than what he was willing to give, so he pushes her off on his friend Gabe not realizing he'd hurt Janna both emotionally and physically. After Gabe dies, Janna and Simon uncover his dirty deeds, he sold weapons to terrorists, and together they go after the bad guys. This is her first op outside the office and she has to pretend to be Simon's GF. Along the way they find love in each other's arms and when the mission is complete it might mean the end of a good thing unless they both come to their senses. As I stated above I really enjoyed this friends to lovers story.
I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I really enjoyed the suspense of the story as well as Simon's "soft" side. I read the story without reading the first two titles, so I had no preconceived notions regarding Simon as another reviewer mentioned. He seemed the kind of guy to bring home to Mom, even though he kept telling himself he was the "love 'em and leave 'em" kind. I really appreciated bringing in the "touchy" subject of spousal abuse and, like Simon, wanted a second chance to kill Gabe. As a strong woman, I cannot admit I understand her guilt, but I have a husband like Simon ;-)
The only concern I had with the book was, initially, there seemed excess narrative writing rather than descriptive. I would have enjoyed more description of why they both needed a quickie, rather than just a statement that he couldn't wait, and neither could she.
That being said, I will definitely purchase the remainder of the series titles!
Hats off to Susan Vaughan. I like each book better than the one before, and I loved the first one! Very enjoyable series. I like these complex and layered characters very much. Simon appeared briefly in a previous book, but we get to meet Janna Harris, the widow of "Hero Harris". Each of them is keeping a secret from the other and they have a history from the time before Simon introduced Janna to her husband. It's clear that they have feelings for each other, but each is trying hard to focus on the mission they share, which will reveal whether "Hero Harris" was a traitor. As they prepare for the mission, they begin to chip away at the reasons they think keep them apart. This is an engrossing story!
I was on vacation and had to explain to my family why I kept sneaking off to read more. I was so glad I got to read all morning and finish when they slept late.
I love the characters the author creates, they seem somehow more real and immediate than many and so it's a pleasure to read. I was given an advance copy of this book, but my review is because I really liked it and hope other readers get to enjoy it as well.

"INTENSE", is what I would call it. But in a good way, I really enjoyed it! I've also really been enjoying the heck out of this Series. I have to admit I did have some reservations about getting this story. What was it? Well in Book 2, Simon was in it briefly but he didn't sound like he was necessarily a stand up guy. A bit of a rebel wildcard yes, but a lot of questions about him and his ways of getting things done. The people around him perceived him that way. But the sneak peek of this book, really did get me interested. I am beginning to see a bit of a pattern here, underestimating a person because they are in the book in a minor way. Then when you read their story it's pretty darn good. There is also a quick look into the next book at the end of this one. It's called "Dark Vengeance", and it has agent Jack Thorne in it. He comes across in other books as a stern, unsmiling, no nonsense kind of man. But once again, I believe there will be more to him and his story too. OK, enough on that. Now onto more of what I thought of this book.

I loved both of the main characters, yes they are so different. I liked how they worked together. As a reader I could see how much they complimented each other even as they fought it. Both had very good reasons to fight that attraction, up to and including that they were on a dangerous mission. I really enjoyed the humor when it cropped up. And the surprising sensitivity that Simon began to show towards Janna. He often mixed it with gentle humor which was fun. And Simon calling her "Q"? Priceless. There was one statement in the book, that I thought stated a part of who he was pretty well. "He rebelled against authority, even when he was part of the authority." Wow, both of them carried scars that carried a lot of pain. Janna carried quite a bit that very few people knew about. I loved her being a beautiful, smart geek. So, if you are thinking that this is all just romance, sex and about the pain life had dealt out to these two, you'd be wrong. There was action, danger, mystery, surprises and plenty of evil guys. The evil guys were clear cut without there being too many to keep track off. And there will be a few surprise twists towards the end of the book too.

I received this book for an honest review.
I am writing this review voluntarily for a free arc . Good book enjoy all her books they catch your attention from the beginning and are well written looking forward to the next one
Good story, interesting twists, and well written characters. It kept me interested. It didn't gloss over the tech aspects, but also kept them simply for those who aren't super techy
